PRESS RELEASE
18 February 2013
Worcester group awarded the inaugural Founders’ publishing prize
The inaugural publication prize of the Worshipful Company of Founders for the best paper published in the International Journal of Cast Metals Research (IJCMR) has been awarded to researchers from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), MA, USA for their paper entitled, ‘Characterisation of hot tearing in Al cast alloys: methodology and procedures' (IJCMR 2011, Vol. 24, p. 88).
The judges said the paper reports a well-designed study that addresses a real practical problem: “describing hot tearing of cast alloys has long been a challenge and the authors have developed a facility that could possibly be used on cast shop floors so as to control the sensitivity of a casting to hot tearing in industrial conditions. Such a facility could certainly be of great help to foundry-men, in particular if the reproducibility of the experiments is effective”.
The authors, Dr Shimin Li, Dr Kumar Sadayappan and Professor Diran Apelian, conducted the research at the Advanced Casting Research Centre at WPI, USA and the CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory, Canada.
Professor Apelian, Howmet Professor of Engineering and Director of the Metal Processing Institute at WPI, commented on behalf of the authors, “We here at the Advanced Casting Consortium are delighted to receive recognition of our work from the industrial sector. It is gratifying to learn that what we do makes a difference, and that our research work makes an impact. We are honoured and humbled by this recognition and specially for being the inaugural recipient of the prize”.
Mr J P Knight, the Clerk of The Worshipful Company of Founders, said that they are “delighted to be able to present this prize, which reinforces the Founders’ Company’s commitment to supporting educational and scientific work in the foundry industry and in the wider world of manufacturing technology.”
The paper can be freely downloaded from http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/maney/ijcmr/2011/00000024/00000002/art00005.
The prize is awarded biennially to a paper that makes outstanding contribution to the assured production of high integrity castings. It was established to reinforce, and demonstrate internationally, the Worshipful Company of Founders’ commitment to scientific and technical research and the application of this research for the benefit of industry and society in general.
